A bunch of years ago I – a snowboarder – put on some jeans, grabbed an old pair of skis, drive to Snowbasin, and went straight to the top of a lift.

I wanted to feel the beginner experience and it I did. That day was incredibly eye opening.

Welp, without doing so intentionally, I’ve found myself with very familiar experiences after I bought my first mountain bike in 20+ years.

Starting from Scratch

I’ve put tens of thousands of miles on my rode bikes in the last 15 years, but it turns out that riding straight on pavement doesn’t translate super well to turning constantly on dirt and rocks. So while my legs have a little fitness in them, there’s no other muscle memory to lean on.

Now, resorts have done a great job with beginner content when it comes to skiing. Mountain biking? we’re still not there.

There are a few bright spots, however, and one of them is absolutely Northstar California. They add it a little humor, without being judgmental or harsh toward newbies, and simply help beginners understand what to do when they ride bikes at the resort and, just as important, why they should do it. Take a look.

Just a little bit of handy info about what to wear, when to wear it, why to wear it? Surprisingly helpful when you’re entering a new, strangle land.

Lean on Lessons from Ski

Ski resorts over the last decade have gotten really, really good at newbie-skier-focused content.

If your resort is stepping up their mountain biking game, I think now would be a great time to lean on those lessons and strategies that helped skiers navigate their first day on the mountain to do the same for mountain bikers.

Every year there will be lots of folks like me hitting the trails, your content will help decide how many of us stick around year after year.
