Fall is a fantastic moment on the resort marketing calendar. The weather is perfect for exercise without overheating, changing leaves are bringing their incredible backdrop to any activity, and the stoke is starting to build among your audience for spending another winter on your slopes.
Which makes it, among other things, a perfect time for events.
Oktoberfest is a classic, but I wanted to highlight a few other examples I’ve seen lately that skew more toward both active and outdoors, taking full advantage of this moment.
You may have seen the famous Cooper’s Hill Cheese Roll in some viral clip online as folks flip end-over-end in pursuit of a giant wheel of Double Gloucester. Marquette took inspiration from this idea and decided to put on their own version. This isn’t the first year of their Cheese Roll, but it’s great to see it come back. Events are rarely original (just count the number of resort Oktoberfests out there) and pulling a bit of inspiration from something that’s already proven to be popular through years of viral videos? That’s a smart move.
I’ve hiked to the top of Nordic Valley dozens and dozens of times in the summer. During my more physically fit years, I’ve often looked up at the Apollo double chair and wondered if I could beat it to the top. Something tells me I’m not alone with Red Bell creating a similar idea in Europe and now bringing it to Eldora. It’s a perfect combination of challenge and resort-connection that is sure to bring out some die hard passholders and skiers who may be looking for a carrot to help them ramp up their pre-season training.
🏃♀️⛰️ Think you can outrun a chairlift? @RedBullUSA Outrun the Lift makes its U.S. debut right here at Eldora Mountain – September 21st! This isn't your average trail race. You're racing against time AND our Alpenglow chairlift up nearly a mile of mountain terrain. pic.twitter.com/bMVNXKRi9H

This might be my favorite of the bunch. Climbing 14ers is a rite of passage when moving to Colorado, but none of the state’s resort’s flank any of these peaks. So what do you do instead? Turn your mountain into a “Faux”-teener by taking that magical number and dividing it by your vertical drop. The result is a fun play on a common phrase and a great event to get your skiers running around you mountain. I especially love that this was doable as a team so that mere mortals like myself would have a chance to participate.
Did your resort put on a clever event this fall? Let me know. I’m sure I’ve missed some.
