How many social icons do resort websites list? And which ones? And where?

Gregg Blanchard   /

It’s a simple question but, as many of you wrap up your season, it’s a simple insight that highlights not only how many social sites resorts are putting their efforts behind but how they show those on the website. These sorts are insights can be really handy when asking questions like:

  • How many icons is too many for our website?
  • Should we put it in the header and footer?
  • What icons could we include besides social?
  • Are we the last ones to not changer to the X icon?
  • Do we need to consider anything before adding this chat widget?

To provide a few answers I audited 50 resort websites. Here’s how it shook out.

Most Popular

In terms of which icons showed up most frequently:

  • Facebook: 98% (49)
  • Instagram: 98% (49)
  • X/Twitter: 60% (30)
  • YouTube: 56% (28)
  • TikTok: 22% (11)
  • LinkedIn: 8% (4)
  • Pinterest: 6% (3)

Other Icons

There were also a few others icons that showed up:

  • Email Sign Up: 10% (5)
  • Contact Us: 4% (2)
  • Trip Advisor: 4% (2)
  • Google Maps: 2% (1)
  • Blog 2% (1)

Average Number

I’ll break these down by both total icons show and the number that were social icons:

  • Average Social Icons: 3.5 (1 = 2, 2 = 6, 3 = 17, 4=18, 5 = 5, 6 = 3)
  • Average Total Icons: 3.7 (1 = 2, 2 = 4, 3 = 13, 4=21, 5 = 8, 6 = 3)
  • Max Icons: 6 (two resorts)
  • Min Icons: 1 (two resorts)

Other Insights

A few other trends I noticed:

  • Icons Shown in the Footer: 98% (49)
  • Icons Shown in the Header: 8% (4)
  • Still Using Twitter Icon, Not X: 13% (4/30)
  • No Icons, Just Text Links: 6% (3)
  • Icons Hidden by Chat Widget : 4% (2)

Like I said, just a little bit of knowledge to tuck away for the next time you ask some of these questions. Hope it helps.
