It was only a matter of time.

Around the kitchen table last week I’d put my money on Arapahoe Basin and Breck being the first to give it a socially-distanced go, but Mt Baldy beat them to the punch.

As I tried to wrap up a big project for the week so I could dig into it, I realized that someone else had beat me to the punch.

Stuart Winchester, of The Storm Skiing Journal and Podcast (and holder of the “skiing.” subdomain on Substack), was able to get an interview with Mt Baldy’s GM, Robby Ellingson.

They cover all the stuff resorts have started to consider about next season:

  • What does socially distancing look like on a mountain?
  • What on-mountain facilities are open?
  • How they’re using golf as a model for operating.
  • How do you avoid congregating as skiers arrive?
  • Is this safe? Smart? Risky?
  • What this means for the community.

I applaud Robby for his transparency around this move. Whatever the result of this effort is, both he and the greater industry and going to learn a ton from this practice round of what next season could very well look like.

Again, give it a listen. Absolutely one of the most insightful bits of content since COVID arrived:

About Gregg & SlopeFillers
I've had more first-time visitors lately, so adding a quick "about" section. I started SlopeFillers in 2010 with the simple goal of sharing great resort marketing strategies. Today I run marketing for resort ecommerce and CRM provider Inntopia, my home mountain is the lovely Nordic Valley, and my favorite marketing campaign remains the Ski Utah TV show that sold me on skiing as a kid in the 90s.
