When it comes down to it, the true power of social media does not lie in your fan count. It doesn’t like in how many “likes” that patrol dog photo received. It lies in the fact that everyone is connected. That each fan in your fan count has 300 friends and each of them has 300 friends and so on.

With that in mind, I love strategies that put tools in the hands of users to spread the stoke for you. A Facebook app Copper Mountain recently got going does exactly that.

Custom Cover Photos
The idea is pretty simple: from a wide selection of great looking, branded Copper Mountain photos, choose one that you would like to “install” as your cover photo. Here are some of the options:

With just a couple of clicks, a fan’s cover photo is changed to an awesome (again, branded), shot of Copper Mountain.

When I last checked, there had been just over 200 cover photo installs through the app. Using the classic 300 friends per user count, that’s a potential reach of 60,000.

The last factor as play is what happens with the user. Like wearing a “Duke” sweatshirt in North Carolina, changing your cover photo to one with a resort’s logo publicly states which side you are on and makes those mental allegiances even stronger.

About Gregg & SlopeFillers
I've had more first-time visitors lately, so adding a quick "about" section. I started SlopeFillers in 2010 with the simple goal of sharing great resort marketing strategies. Today I run marketing for resort ecommerce and CRM provider Inntopia, my home mountain is the lovely Nordic Valley, and my favorite marketing campaign remains the Ski Utah TV show that sold me on skiing as a kid in the 90s.
